Domaine Gour de Chaulé "La Vigneronne" Côtes du Rhône '23

Domaine Gour de Chaulé, located in the village of Gigondas, was founded in 1900 by Eugene Bonfils. All the wine produced at the estate was sold in bulk to negociants until 1970, when a small percentage of the estate’s wine was bottled for sale to private clients. The domaine had been a standout in the region under the leadership of Aline Bonfils, and her daughter Stephanie continued to produce wines that are complex, classic expressions of the region along with Paul, her son, who now leads the estate. The vineyards are certified organic.

The domaine comprises 15 hectares, 10 of which are within Gigondas, with the remaining 5 hectares in the surrounding communes of Vacqueyras and Violes. Grenache dominates the vineyard plantings, with smaller amounts of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the vines average more than 60 years in age. The grapes for the red wines are not destemmed, an approach that the domaine believes is essential to showing the classic character of Gigondas, a village whose wines are often overshadowed by those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The “La Vigneronne” cuvée is composed of about 90% Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre accounting for the rest. The wine is aged in large neutral foudres, then bottled without fining or filtration.

The nose shows notes of red and black berries and plums, with aromas of garrigue, violets, anise, citrus peel, and peppercorn. Medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and a long finish, this is a great match for grilled meats alongside sautéed or grilled mushrooms.
